OpenAI is adding new layers to the AI tools that looks to make working easy for people. The company now allows AI to read and edit content directly within your coding applications or text editors, thanks to the ‘Work With Apps’ functionality on macOS. The new upgrade can be availed and accessed by users on the 1.2025.057 version after downloading the ChatGPT for macOS app on their Mac systems.

Integrating the ‘Work With Apps’ functionality for ChatGPT on macOS enables the output of more context-aware responses based on the work details provided by the users, resulting in more efficient multitasking. Various apps are supported by this ChatGPT feature, that includes text editors like Apple Notes, Notion and TextEdit to coding-specific apps such as Xcode, Script Editor, VS Code, Terminal, iTerm, Warp and Prompt.

Work With Apps On ChatGPT: How To Get Started

To start using this feature you need to keep ChatGPT open in the background and then click on Option+Space along with the application they wish to work on. For instance, you can do this for apps like Xcode or Apple Notes. If you have one of these open, simply press Open+Space and the ChatGPT interface will open and detect the application automatically.

Depending on the app, ChatGPT will indicate it with an app-specific tab: the ‘Work with Notes’ or ‘Work with Xcode’ tab. Now you just have to feed the right prompt to ChatGPT and get responses based on context.

Before using this feature, you must enable ChatGPT’s accessible settings that needs authentication using a password on the Mac system. The ChatGPT upgrade now allows users to edit files directly without needing to copy-paste, based on its integrated development environments (IDEs). Those who use AI for coding can now do so even faster with users also allowed to copy the edits directly.

According to OpenAI, any content that you access through the ‘Work With Apps’ feature will be part of the ChatGPT history, with the company aiming to use the data to enhance its AI models. But users can keep their content private as well by opting for the “Improve the Model for Everyone" setting. Users can also open the temporary chats feature to avoid carrying any history in their ChatGPT account.
