Your Phone’s Battery Draining Faster Than Usual? Google Says It Was Instagram’s Fault
Amazon Prime users in India will start seeing ads between movies, shows and more from June 2025. The platform has reached out to its subscribers in the country this week and informed them about a major change to its model, similar to how it operates in the US and parts of Europe.
Amazon says you will have the option to get the ad-free experience but for that you will need to pay extra money (over your existing Prime subscription).
The ad-riddled scheme seems to have worked for platforms like Netflix (not in India yet) so it was inevitable that Amazon joins the queue with its own ad-free tier along with the regular Prime membership plans.
Amazon started testing this ad-tier in India last year and it will come into effect from June 17, 2025 in the country.
Amazon Prime Ads In Movies: What The Company Says
Amazon has sent out email to its customers in India, which explains the reason to bring ads to the country. “Starting June 17th, 2025, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than TV channels and other streaming services. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership."
We have independently verified the email from Amazon and more subscribers are getting them in their registered email ID as we speak. The company clearly says that it needs the ad money to invest in making more content for the market. Netflix had a similar reason when its ad-based plan was launched in the West earlier.
So, is there any way to avoid seeing ads on Amazon Prime after June 2025? The company gives you the option to take an add-on for the ad-free service that will cost you Rs 699 for one year or Rs 129 per month.
This basically means you can pay the Rs 299 and Rs 1,499 monthly and yearly plans, respectively and pay another Rs 129 per month or Rs 699 per year to stop seeing ads on the Amazon video streaming platform.
Amazon has not offered the new ad-free option on the Indian website at the time of writing, and we might have to wait till next month to see the changes. People will surely be bothered by these changes in the OTT space, especially with many criticising the content availability, and now having ads between them will sour their experience further.
