Vivo X Fold 5 has made its debut in the Indian market this week, going up against the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 model. Both these brands are bringing their latest foldables to the region, as OnePlus decides against launching the Open 2 model in 2025 altogether. Vivo showed its credentials with the X Fold 3 Pro version last year, and gave us more reasons to believe that a Fold doesn’t have to make compromises to become the complete product.

Vivo X Fold 5 is priced in India at Rs 1,49,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB variant. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 price in India starts at Rs 1,74,999 for the base 256GB model, going up to Rs 1,86,999 for the 512GB and Rs 2,16,999 if you want the 16GB + 1TB variant. 

Vivo X Fold 5 will be available starting July 30, while Samsung brings the Fold 7 earlier to the market from July 25, with pre-bookings now open. 

Vivo X Fold 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Design 

Both the Vivo and Samsung foldables have a glass body at the back and armour/ceramic glass protection on the front. The X Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 unfolded dimensions are 4.3mm and 4.2mm, respectively. While in the folded state you get 9.2mm with the X Fold 7 and 8.9mm with the Z Fold 7. These devices weigh 217 grams for the X Fold 5 and 215 grams for the Z Fold 7. These figures show how Samsung has made drastic changes to make it lighter and thinner than the Vivo fold model. Vivo’s device comes with IPX8 + IPX9 + IP5X rating, while the Z Fold 7 IP48 rating.

The X Fold 5 comes with a 6.53-inch LTPO AMOLED cover display that supports 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and gets Armor glass protection. The 8.03-inch foldable screen also has an LTPO AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate supported and offers 4500 nits of peak brightness. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 6.5-inch LTPO AMOLED 2x display on the cover with Corning Gorilla Ceramic 2 durability while the inner screen gets an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x LTPO panel with 2600 nits of peak brightness.

Vivo is using last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with 16GB RAM to power the X Fold 5. You get it with Android 15-based Funtouch OS that is promised to get 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. 

Samsung’s new foldable goes for this year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC with 12GB or 16GB RAM and available in 256GB, 512GB or 1TB storage models. More importantly, Samsung is the first brand to launch its new product with the latest Android 16 version out of the box, and promises 7 years of OS and security updates for the new device. 

Vivo X Fold 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Cameras 

Vivo is offering a triple rear camera system that has 50MP wide primary sensor with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto with OIS and 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. The front of the foldable has a 20MP wide and a 20MP sensor in the cover. 

Samsung opts for its latest 200MP sensor with OIS as a part of a triple camera system that also has a 10MP telephoto lens with OIS and a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens. The front of the screen has a 10MP wide and 10MP sensor on the cover. 

Vivo X Fold 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Battery And Charging 

Vivo’s new fold is light, thin but does not take a hit in the battery department as it carries a large 6,000mAh unit that supports 80W wired and 40W wireless charging speeds. Samsung’s Fold 7 is lighter, and thinner than the X Fold 5 but you get a 4,400mAh battery with 25W charging supported, and no adapter in the box.
