Meta’s microblogging platform, Thread, will now provide users with a direct messaging option, facilitating a private and secure connection. The feature that had been requested by Thread users for a long time provides the platform with an Instagram-like direct messaging model. It will allow users to share one-on-one text messages within the application. The update, which is an effort by Meta to strengthen interpersonal interactions, has been made live by the tech giant for all users aged 18 and above.
Launched on Thursday, July 3, the update also marked Thread’s second anniversary and celebrates the app’s growth in the social media consumer scene, establishing its own identity. While Instagram leads its roster, Meta has confirmed that over a third of daily users follow different accounts on Thread, signalling a new wind as a rising section of the internet community gives the app a try.
It is easy for users to access DMs in Threads. To start a conversation, users with a profile only have to tap the message icon and start sending texts to each other. However, direct messaging on Thread is currently limited to followers or mutual Instagram followers who are at least 18 years old. Meta says the restriction has been imposed to maintain safety and encourage positive exchanges on the platform.
The initial version of Thread’s DMs is focused mainly on facilitating conversations. But, Meta is planning to add more features to make direct messaging more user-friendly and exciting. Users can expect to get new tools that also enhance the safety of their dialogue, featuring message controls that help you decide who can send you messages and manage the requests and also the option for group messaging. Apart from these, inbox filters are also in the works that help prioritise important messages and clean up your inbox.
Meta has also confirmed the launch of Threads Highlighter, which is a visual element designed to identify trending topics and interesting conversations. Thread users will be able to quickly identify the trends and content that is sparking maximum engagement upon being notified.
