Google cloud outage: A massive chunk of the internet went offline for hours as Google services faced errors which caused the issue. The popular tracking platform for these outages Downdetector has seen reports of well over 11,000 in the early hours of Thursday, and as many as 1000 reports coming from India on Friday morning as well.

The Google cloud outage had a direct impact on various third-party services as well as Google products like YouTube and Search, Google Meet, Google Drive and more. “We are experiencing service issues with multiple GCP products beginning on Thursday, 2025-06-12 10:51 PDT. Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue," this was the first outage report from Google Cloud on Thursday morning in the US.

The Google cloud team had been working at urgency to fix the issues which brought almost all of the internet services to its knees. People were understandably miffed at the situation, especially when some of them were just starting their work day and Google decided to take all the important services down with it because of these issues.

One hour later, the cloud team shared the update, “Our engineers are continuing to mitigate the issue and we have confirmation that the issue is recovered in some locations," but still many regions were still unable to use any of the Google and third-party services.

The situation started to improve after the major outage, where the status report notified, “We have identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations. Our infrastructure has recovered in all regions except us-central1."

Having said that Google continued to face challenges with other systems that hampered a full restoration for a few more hours.

Eventually, the Google cloud outage was configured and all the system errors were fixed by the team of engineers which got all the major services back online for users across the globe. “Vertex AI Online Prediction is full recovered as of 18:18 PDT. All the services are fully recovered from the service issue. We will publish analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation, the final status update.

Google’s dependence to run the internet and a host of services has been scrutinised time and again, this is another major incident which tells us how using one company to run a major part of the internet is not the right measure to follow. We had a similar issue with Windows systems last year when a Crowdstrike update error disrupted major airline, and IT services globally that took a few days to repair and fix.
