Google has introduced a number of significant updates to Gmail, Google Workspace, Google Docs, and even Google Vids at I/O 2025 this month. But one of the major upgrades we saw is related to Google Meet. Google is using the power of AI to offer real-time translation for video meetings that will let you have conversations in different languages and still make sense to each other.

According to the company, the speech translation feature on Google Meet instantly converts spoken words into the language that the other person on the call speaks, that too without compromising on the original voice, tone and expression.

During the Google I/O 2025 keynote, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, demonstrated how an English speaker converses with a Spanish speaker, with Meet providing AI-generated translations in English that maintain the speaker’s voice inflexions and vice versa. To compare, Microsoft Teams unveiled a preview of a comparable AI translation function earlier this year.

Google claims that because speech translation delay is so minimal, it is now possible for numerous individuals to talk together, something that hasn’t been possible as of now.

While using this new feature, the translated speech will be superimposed on top of the original voice, which you will still be able to hear softly when the other person speaks.

Google Meet Real-Time Translate Release Details

The speech translation feature has been offered to the Gemini AI subscribers in beta this month. The new tool will support English and Spanish. While Italian, German and Portuguese will be added later.

The company wrote in its blog post, “Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers are now able to get translation in English and Spanish in beta, with other languages to follow in the coming weeks. This will come to Workspace business customers for early testing this year."

In addition to this, Google has also rolled out new Gemini features for Gmail during its I/O Conference. These include new personalised replies in Gmail, allowing users to draft their emails through AI suggestions that match their specific context and tone.

Furthermore, it comes with a new Inbox Cleanup tool. With this feature, users may instruct Gemini to clear their inbox with a single click by giving it instructions such as “delete all of my unread emails". Gmail now has Fast Appointment Scheduling as well. Users may now schedule meetings right from their mailboxes.
