Your Phone’s Battery Draining Faster Than Usual? Google Says It Was Instagram’s Fault
Google has now introduced its AI-first 3D video communication platform, dubbed Beam, that enables users to connect with each other in a more intuitive manner by turning 2D video streams into 3D experiences.
Launched at the Google I/O 2025 keynote on Tuesday, the platform uses the Google Cloud infrastructure and the company’s AI expertise to provide enterprise-grade reliability and connectivity with existing workflows.
According to Google, they have launched Beam as a rebranded version of their previously launched Project Starline, a research project which the company started a few years ago to redefine video communication.
In a blog post, the tech giant noted that the Google Beam platform will employ AI to operate a new generation of devices that allow individuals to build meaningful connections irrespective of their location.
Google Beam: How It Works?
It combines several different webcams to catch the user from different angles. The video streams are then merged using AI to create a 3D light field display. Google claims to have head-tracking capabilities that are accurate down to the millimeter and run at 60 frames per second (fps).
Google Beam uses an AI volumetric video model to convert regular 2D video streams into realistic 3D experiences that appear from any angle. It, in addition to the light field display, develops a sense of dimensionality and depth, allowing you to initiate eye contact and read subtle cues.
Additionally, to enhance user communication, Google says that they are also exploring plans to bring the Speech Translation feature in real time to Beam. This functionality, available today in Google Meet, allows you to have authentic, near-real-time translated discussions while keeping voice, tone, and emotion.
When Can You Try Google Beam?
Google Beam will be available via HP devices at InfoComm in a few weeks, while selected customers will get this functionality by the end of this year.
“We’re also working with key channel partners such as Diversified and AVI-SPL to bring Google Beam to businesses and organisations worldwide," wrote Google.
Apart from Beam, Google has also introduced several new products and features powered by AI. These include advanced image and video generation tools like Imagen 4 and Veo 3, an Android XR for smart wearables and new updates to Gemini and Search.
