OpenAI has been previewing the shopping feature on ChatGPT over the last few weeks, and now it is officially here. The AI chatbot can help you shop, give tips and even list out the products that fit your preferences based on the text prompt you feed ChatGPT.

The AI chatbot is letting you use the new service via different Shopping GPTs on the web or mobile, something that Google Shopping does not offer outside of the United States till date.

Google has been the obvious choice for people to search for items and even get direct access to the products via different channels. But ChatGPT shopping brings the AI flavour which lets you compare and have a more in-depth knowledge based on your needs and not the name of the product.

ChatGPT Shopping: How To Get Started

ChatGPT shopping is basically enabled using a GPT that has been developed for this purpose.

ChatGPT Shopping does work for the free users however, they have a limit of 10 queries like the other features, which gets refreshed in 6 hours. We tried out the new feature with our free and paid account, and you could clearly see the difference mostly related to the benefits that the premium ChatGPT user gets.

OpenAI says shopping will offer improved product results, visual product details, pricing along with reviews and yes, direct links to buy. The company also assures that the product results are chosen independently and are not ads.

The tone of the AI assistant is mostly friendly, sometimes too chatty to be fair but the responses are clear, detailed and to the point. For instance, we asked for the best phones under Rs 25,000 and where we could buy them. ChatGPT gave us a list of the phones and product links across different channels online. We didn’t see dedicated cards for the items but that could also be part of the gradual rollout.

We noticed that the brand site links open to the product, while other e-commerce platforms were not receptive to the page offered by the AI chatbot. The feature does feel like in its early days so that should improve in the next few days.

More Worries For Google?

Google Shopping has been a reliable source for millions but the AI integration is limited to select regions for now. You only get results for the search parameters and after trying out shopping with ChatGPT it feels dated.

Which means ChatGPT has a great window to tap into these users and we feel Google has to be worried about how its AI rival is gradually eating into its territory.
